What books should every young woman read? Here's "A Reading List for Every Young Woman," from the Independent Woman's Quarterly. IWQ put this question to a distinguished group of writers and intellectuals. IWQ asked them to name four books they consider essential for the educated woman. IWQ identified Jane Austen with the most mentions. Tied for second place: two dead white males, Aristotle and Thucydides. Most surprising book to make the list … Mommie Dearest.
Mommy Dearest? What kind of a book is that?
Its a book that tarnished the reputation of Joan Crawford. Crawford was a silent film ingenue during during the late 1920s. She reinvented herself as a more glamorous Hollywood star of the 1930s and 40s, winning an Oscar for her role as a housewife-turned-businesswoman in Mildred Pierce (1945). Despite these successes Crawford is often remembered for a later persona, as a severe and neurotic former beauty in heavy makeup, based on a series of horror and suspense films she made in the 1960s.
Mommy Dearest, is a 1978 biography by her adopted daughter Christina, which described Crawford as a harshly abusive alcoholic; Christina's allegations of being beaten with a wire coat hanger gained particular fame. The book was made into a 1981 movie starring Faye Dunaway as Crawford. Back to Table of Contents...
